The most ancient site of Vaishnavites monasteries dates back to the 15th century and has twenty-six surviving Satras (Monastries) still functional in Majuli. It is famous for handmade masks, dances, music, and drama.
Tribes inhabit it, and as flood ravages each year resulting in soil erosion, villagers migrate to the inner side of the island and build houses on bamboo stilt. But this flooding of the island also brings blessing in disguise as it becomes easier for the residents to traverse on boats to different places on the island. It also augments the fertility of their fields.
Mighty Brahmaputra River surrounds it, which makes Majuli island remote. The scenery of the fields, the simple life of the natives, sunrise, sunsets, chirping of birds synchronizing with the river waves, and villagers singing folk songs and domestic animals negotiating the waterways are mesmerizing and a lifetime experience for the visitors.
